Corktown - 19th Century Irish Neighbourhood

To Sign Petition

The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation has had a Stage 1 archeaological Assessment of waterfront lands in its posession for the past 2 1/2 years, however, it has yet to develop a provisional conservation plan for the preservation and interpretation of archaeological resources for the East Bayfront and West Don Lands areas. It has also not consulted with any heritage organizations or citizens groups about what might be worth preserving or commemorating. This is a stipulted requirement in Toronto's Archaeological Master Plan for the Central Waterfront. The areas that are slated for redevelopment include many houses and businesses that were demolished in the 19th century Irish immigrant neighbourhood of Corktown.

Ontario Ministry of Culture archaeologist Malcolme Horne has recommended that a provisional conservation plan be in place before development applications are appproved and stage 2 archaeological assessments undertaken. Unfortunately, Ontario Minister of Culture Caroline Di Cocco has not supported Horne in this position. We will be presenting a copy of a petition from the P.A.S.T. Coalition to the Minister of Culture before the end of November.

Please let us know if you or anyone with your organization might have any suggestions on how to make sure the TWRC includes preservation and interpretation of our archaeological heritage into its designs for both the private and public realms.

Thanks very much,
