The Clans of Ireland Ltd. was founded in 1989; it is now a totally voluntary organization, not in receipt of any grant aid, and holds Registered Charity status in Ireland (Charity No. 11585). The Chairperson and Board of Directors give their time and efforts to assist on a voluntary basis to promote all Registered family Clans worldwide and to assist in the formation of new family Clans where one does not already exist for a specific family surname. We receive daily enquiries from people of Irish ancestry worldwide seeking to gain contact with, or from, their own family Clan. Background
The growing influence of the Gaelic League at the turn of the twentieth century rekindled an interest in Gaelic culture and prompted the current cultural revival. The first modern Irish Clans were formed in the latter half of the twentieth century, and today they function as special interest groups which actively safeguard our cultural heritage and traditions.
Irish Clans are somewhat similar to Genealogical Societies or One Name Societies - but with an additional social dimension which is unique. The Irish Government instigated the establishment of The Clans of Ireland Ltd. in 1989 to co-ordinate the activities of the Irish Clans, and over two hundred and thirty Irish Clans have been registered to date.
In recognition of the special role which Irish Clans play within the national cultural revival, the Irish Government has accredited The Clans of Ireland Ltd. as a Registered Charity (CHY 11585), and all registered Irish Clans are automatically eligible to apply for charitable status.
